At Bird & Bird we are committed to realising the benefits of diversity throughout our business. As an international firm with over 1000 people working in fourteen different offices in nine countries, diversity is intrinsic to our firm. The diversity of our international workforce is designed to mirror those of our clients and the countries in which we operate. We see employing a diverse group of people from different backgrounds, where individual differences are both respected and valued, as key to our future growth and ongoing success. We strive to create and maintain an inclusive work environment in which all of our people are seen as individuals and where they are each supported and encouraged to achieve their best regardless of gender, political or religious belief, race, disability, age or sexual orientation.
Bird & Bird’s Diversity Policy is central to our recruitment and advancement process. It is designed to underscore the importance of fairness and promote an understanding, at all levels, of the importance and manifest benefits of an inclusive culture based on respect for the individual.
The policy is kept under continual review by our Diversity Committee. The Committee is a cross functional forum which is open to all of our people, irrespective of whether they are partners, assistants or support staff. The Committee has responsibility for championing diversity in all aspects of our business and continually reviews the firm’s policies and procedures to ensure they remain appropriate, contemporary and abreast of both legislative change and developments in social attitude. The Committee regularly review the firm’s statistics on diversity and it ensures appropriate management focus on issues as required.
The Diversity Committee concerns itself with all issues concerning our people with regard to:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender
- Political belief
- Race and ethnicity
- Religion
- Sexual orientation
The Committee reports directly to the firm’s Executive Management Group and so it has not only the endorsement but also the ear of the executive. The Committee also has direct involvement in the firm’s Recruitment, Human Resources and Learning & Development functions. By being so positioned, the Committee has an active involvement in the critical functions of the firm.
