Warning - Suspicious letters/e-mails

Money left by will

We are aware of a number of bogus e-mails which are being received by individuals in various parts of the world, claiming to be from Bird & Bird, or individuals in Bird & Bird, which indicate that the addressee of the e-mail has inherited a substantial sum of money, and go on to ask the recipient for personal information. These communications are not genuinely from us, and appear to be part of a scam being orchestrated by someone using our name illegally and without authorisation, with the presumed aim of seeking payment of fees in advance. We have been alerted to several of these in recent months, have reported them to the police and have been taking steps to try to stop it.

The communications are often in the form of emails, are typically badly written and they sometimes use the name of a current or former employee or partner of Bird & Bird. Please note that Bird & Bird does not any longer deal with administration of moneys left following a death. The e-mails are likely to be linked to organised fraud. If you have received such a communication we strongly advise that you just ignore it, and do not respond to it or communicate further with the person who sent the e-mail to you, and certainly do not give personal information or send any money.

For details of this type of fraud, and many other types of fraud visit the FSA website:

Or go to www.fsa.gov.uk and search for scams and swindles

For more detailed information on this type of scam see the section entitled "advance fee fraud" at http://www.ncis.gov.uk/ukta/2002/threat05.asp. This is the website of the UK's Serious and Organised Crime Agency (previously National Criminal Intelligence Service).
