Dr. Nicola Ohrtmann



Dr. Nicola Ohrtmann is a lawyer and a Counsel at Bird & Bird's office in Düsseldorf, where she advises clients regarding the public sector and energy & utilities.

She is specialised in public procurement and competition law but also advises on general commercial law matters. She further more and more focuses on compliance matters. Nicola assisted in a number of public awards of contracts both on the part of the contracting authority and on the part of tenderers (e.g. the public procurement "BOS-Net"-trunked radio or the tender of the Electronic Toll Collection System for trucks in Germany). She also advises public private partnership-projects, amongst them a liquid waste and school PPP as well as the construction of a deep water harbour and a court building. In addition, she consistently advises and legally represents in review procedures.

Nicola is regarded as one of the often recommended lawyers for public procurement matters in Germany (source: JUVE compendium of economic law firms 2008/2009 and 2009/2010).

From 1993 to 1998, she studied at the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn. In 2000, she completed the conferral of her doctorate with her dissertation about obligatory mediation according to § 15 a EGZPO (civil process order). After having successfully passed the second state examination in 2002, she began working as a lawyer at the international corporate law firm Bird & Bird in Düsseldorf. In January 2006, she went to Kümmerlein, Simon & Partner in Essen and returned to Bird & Bird in January 2008 in the position of a Senior European Consultant.

Nicola regularly publishes articles in professional journals and business papers. She is publisher and author of the compendium "Compliance-requirements for public entities". She is a lecturer at the Heinrich-Heine University in Düsseldorf and at the Düsseldorf Law School (DLS). She manages trainings and conferences for public procurement law and compliance. Her working languages are German and English.
