David has a particular focus on Intellectual Property and regulatory matters, specialising in the life sciences sector.
Dr David Pountney is a lawyer in our Intellectual Property Group, based in Beijing.
He has assisted clients on a variety of IP and regulatory matters, including patent opinions, freedom to operate and validity assessments. He has a particular interest in the legal issues concerning pharmaceutical product lifecycle management. He has also assisted with the development and implementation of IP protection strategies and IP audits.
David relocated to China in 2012 to work with a leading international law firm. In addition to his work in the patent field, David has experience of trade mark matters and has assisted clients with enforcement strategy in China.
Prior to qualifying as a lawyer, David spent over a decade as a scientist conducting medical research at clinical centres in London, Paris and New York, before leading a neuroscience pre-clinical drug discovery team at GlaxoSmithKline for over five years. He then joined an international law firm in London as a scientific consultant; working alongside lawyers when there was a need to review complex scientific information to support litigation, IP, regulatory and various commercial and corporate transactions. In particular, he assisted with extensive due diligence to support several M&A transactions in the life sciences sector. It was during this time that he qualified as a lawyer.
Having earned a BSc degree in Biochemistry in 1991 and a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry from King's College London in 1996, David qualified in England and Wales in 2013 and joined us in 2015
