Ali is a Partner in the International Corporate Group based in London and a member of the Tech & Comms and Media sector groups with a focus on Digital Business.
He joined Bird & Bird in June 2010.
Ali has a First Class Honours Degree in Business Studies from Cass Business School.
He is experienced in many aspects of corporate work and regularly advises on cross border mergers and acquisitions, venture capital and private equity transactions for digital businesses. In particular, Ali has experience working with start-ups, growth companies, management and investors across digital businesses in the Tech & Comms and Media sectors.
Examples of Ali's M&A work include acting for: bwin.Party Digital Entertainment, an online gambling company, on a US$35m disposal of the World Poker Tour business to Ourgame International Holdings, the shareholders of Albion Brand, a PR agency, on a sale of a majority stake to the US-based marketing services group KBS (owned by MDC Partners), Lorillard, Inc., a US tobacco company on its £60m acquisition of Skycig, a leading UK electronic cigarette brand, the majority shareholders of Gas Turbine Efficiency (formerly listed on the AIM market) on a US$30m disposal to Wood Group plc and the shareholders of Toptable on a US$55m disposal to Opentable.
Examples of Ali's venture capital work include acting for: Smedvig Capital on its £1m series A investment in Profile Financial Solutions, an online financial advisory business and £6m series B investment in Captify Media, a search retargeting service that enables advertisers to focus on users to match their desired audience with inventory; Farfetch.com the high-end online fashion retailer, on its US$86m series E funding led by DST Global and US66m series D funding round led by Vitruvian Partners; Quill Content the global content creators, on its £1m series A funding round led by Ariadne Capital and its £5m series B funding round led by Smedvig Capital; and Just Eat on its US$64m series C funding round led by Vitruvian Partners.
