Australian office launches 'GC for a Day' campaign

Australia’s law students are being offered the opportunity to sample for themselves a day in the life of a 21st Century General counsel

GC for a Day - Bird & Bird Sydney

In a project aimed at increasing the profile of the in-house legal career path among law students, international law firm Bird & Bird is pioneering its 'GC for a Day' campaign in Australia. It is inviting the nation’s law students to create 90 second videos answering the question; “What do you envisage as the greatest opportunity for General Counsel of the future?”

The students with the winning entries will spend a day shadowing a General Counsel at either Vodafone, Bravura Solutions, AUB Group, FetchTV or Enero Group. Interstate winners will be flown to Sydney to participate, and all winners will have a one-on-one mentoring session with a Bird & Bird lawyer followed by a celebration dinner.

Bird & Bird, which entered the Australian market in October 2014 by a merger with Truman Hoyle, consciously veered away from the more traditional essay or mooting competitions run by other law firms for a modern, technology led competition reflective of the firm's clients, which are trail blazers in the new digital world.

Shane Barber, managing partner of Bird & Bird in Australia, said; “This is a really great opportunity for creative and ambitious law students to get first-hand experience of the challenges facing General Counsel at some of Australia’s leading organisations. The organisations participating cover many of the sectors most important to Australia’s future – telecommunications, technology, finance and media.

“Creating these sorts of opportunities is part of Bird & Bird’s DNA. We love supporting creative thinkers and inquisitive minds and are really keen to learn what student lawyers see as the greatest opportunity for General Counsel of the future.”

Bird & Bird's focus on industries being transformed by technology or the knowledge economy makes them the go-to firm for the world's most innovative companies.

Entry is now open and the competition runs until 16 March. More information is available at www.gcforaday.com
