Bird & Bird is pleased to announce the appointment of leading equity capital markets lawyer Wing On Chui as a partner to its Corporate practice in Hong Kong on 4 February 2015.

Wing On joins from King & Wood Mallesons. He has over 20 years' legal experience and specialises in corporate finance, securities, M&A, joint ventures, corporate restructurings, private equity and PRC-related transactions.

Wing On also has extensive experience in handling IPOs for PRC enterprises and non-PRC companies on the Main Board and Growth Enterprise market of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.  He was appointed as a China-Appointed Attesting Officer by the Ministry of Justice of the PRC in 2009, and has also been  a member of the Professional Services Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council since 2013.

Justin Walkey, Chairman, Asia-Pacific, Bird & Bird said: "We are delighted  to welcome Wing On to Bird & Bird. Our Asia-Pacific practice has been going from strength to strength in recent months and we are very pleased to add his appointment to our portfolio of dynamic hires in the region. Hong Kong is a key international finance centre and Wing On's extensive experience will enable us to further develop our corporate offering to clients."

Wing On added: "I am excited to be joining Bird & Bird. Its energetic expansion in Asia-Pacific offers me an excellent platform to grow my practice. Bird & Bird is known for its international reach and for actively encouraging cross-border, practice and sector collaboration. I look forward to being able to support the firm in this strategy, and helping strengthen its corporate practice in the region."

Wing On's appointment follows a series of senior lateral hires across China and the Asia Pacific region in the past 18 months and which have included Sven-Michael Werner (Corporate), Michelle Chan (TMT), David Allison (IP), Ying Wang and Seow Hui Goh (Employment), and Zhaofeng Zhou (Competition).

In addition to these senior appointments the firm has also significantly strengthened its geographical footprint in the region with the launch of its new office in Australia and entrance into new and emerging markets through strategic cooperations with leading local firms: K & K Advocates and Nurjadin Sumono Mulyadi & Partners in Indonesia, and Hwang Mok Park in Korea.

Bird & Bird has also recently undertaken a restructuring of their business in the Asia Pacific region and so it is in-line with the firm's sector focus globally.

A good example of this sector focus is its growing Life Sciences practice in the region which is headed by Alison Wong. Alison is working with a team of 20 lawyers drawn from IP, corporate, employment, data protection and competition practies across Bird & Bird offices and cooperation firms in Asia.

The firm has also implemented some strategic moves, hires and promotions within its IP practice in China. On the brands side, David Allison, Counsel, has relocated to Beijing. David, who speaks Mandarin, is an experienced brands lawyer and along with Rieko Michishita, Counsel, also based in Beijing, will focus on building the brands team in China through Bird & Bird's wholly owned trade mark agency.

The firm's patent litigation practice continues to go from strength to strength with the appointment to Partner of Ted Chwu in 2014, following on the back of the promotion of Christine Yiu in 2013. A key part of Bird & Bird success comes from the multi-disciplinary team of experienced litigators with science backgrounds and patent attorneys.

Matthew Laight, Head of Bird & Bird's IP group in Asia Pacific, commenting on the China practice said: "We have one of the largest IP teams of international firms in China with over 40 fee earners located across Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. We have major growth plans not just in China but also across the Asia Pacific region with some exciting developments on the horizon."

Bird & Bird's partner headcount has increased to a total of 36 in the Asia Pacific region.
