Bird & Bird today announced that it has entered into strategic cooperation agreements with two leading Indonesian law firms: the intellectual property specialists K&K Advocates and the business law firm Nurjadin Sumono Mulyadi & Partners (NSMP). The agreements were signed in Jakarta yesterday.
The combination of services offered by K&K Advocates (K&K) and NSMP provides access for Bird & Bird clients to best in class legal and industry expertise in key sectors which are closely aligned to Bird & Bird's core practice.
Bird & Bird has a long term presence in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore, and has experienced a period of rapid growth in the Asia Pacific region over the past 18 months. As part of its strategic, client-led approach it has established a number of other cooperation agreements in the region, including Australia, China and Malaysia. Earlier this year Bird & Bird was the first international law firm to sign a cooperation agreement with one of Korea's top 10 law firms, Hwang Mok & Park. These agreements are an important step in the continued expansion of Bird & Bird’s service offering in ASEAN and the wider Asia Pacific region.
Justin Walkey, Chairman of Bird & Bird’s Asia-Pacific practice, said: "The introduction of the ASEAN Economic Community has accelerated client expectations and in turn created a strong demand for Bird & Bird's services within the participating countries and in particular within Indonesia. We are delighted to welcome NSMP and K&K Advocates to the Bird & Bird international network. The combination of these cooperation agreements with K&K and NSMP in Indonesia together with our existing Singapore and Malaysian service hubs will allow us to better support new and existing clients in South East Asia and the ASEAN region. We look forward to continuing successful business relationships with both firms."
Bird & Bird CEO David Kerr said: "We are very excited about extending our presence into Indonesia. The Indonesian economy is fast moving into a new consumer led development phase which has resulted in a growing demand for high-quality, international advice in areas where technology and regulation are driving change. These cooperation agreements bring together NSMP and K&K's deep local insight with Bird & Bird's leading capabilities in innovation, technology and telecommunications across the Asia Pacific region and internationally."
Justisiari Perdana Kusumah, Managing Partner of K&K Advocates, said: "These cooperation agreements combine our specialisation in IP and TMT with Bird & Bird's reputation as a leading international law firm. Together we will be able to provide the much-needed support to our regional and international clients, and compete in the ASEAN Economic community, especially with respect to IP rights protection. This cooperation will seek to provide a broad range of clients with a powerful tool for their development in the global community and in Indonesia."
Iwan Nurjadin, Founding Partner, NSMP Law Office said: “The agreements we have signed today show our commitment to providing our clients with best possible services and equipping them to face new opportunities in the ASEAN region and beyond. With an increasing number of cross border transactions requiring common law concepts and terminology, businesses need advisors with an international mind-set. We believe these associations will make it easier for our clients to realise their potential in the global markets."
