Bird & Bird bolsters the Aviation & Aerospace Group with the appointment of Partner Simon Chamberlain from Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW), with Senior Associate Thea Ward

01 January 2009

Joining Bird & Bird’s London office, Simon deals primarily with transactional, regulatory and commercial matters in the aviation sector following more than 28 years' aviation industry experience, of which 10 years was spent as an in-house lawyer at British Airways followed by 15 years at FFW, where he developed a successful aviation practice.

He acts for various domestic and international airlines, financiers, lessors, corporations and high net worth individuals on a range of transactions including aircraft and engine sale, purchase, financing and leasing. He also advises on a wide range of commercial arrangements and agreements such as engineering and maintenance agreements, airline franchise agreements, slot exchange agreements, aircraft fractional ownership schemes and aviation regulatory issues.

Thea has more than 8 years' aviation law experience, first at Clifford Chance (including an 18 month secondment to the Transportation Division of the London office of DVB) and latterly at FFW. She has considerable experience of aircraft acquisition, disposal, repossession, finance and leasing.

Paul Briggs, Joint Managing Partner of the Aviation and Aerospace Group, said: "With our 2008 merger with Lane & Partners we acquired leading expertise in aviation regulation and aircraft leasing disputes and repossession.  Simon was the perfect fit to join the team in January 2009 to strengthen our non contentious aviation practice.  The Bird & Bird strategy is to have detailed 'hands on' industry leading experience in all the sectors in which we operate.  Simon's 10 years with BA is a perfect match for my 10 years with BAE Systems.

“Simon shares with the rest of the team a passion for the industry and a very practical and commercial approach to legal solutions and providing value for money to our clients.  We are not ivory tower lawyers. We have a great aviation team and are really enjoying working together - we will grow further at the right time."
