Bird & Bird strengthens International IP Group with key lateral hire in Madrid

15 May 2008

International law firm Bird & Bird today announces the appointment of IP partner Miguel Rodríguez, who joins existing IP partner, Manuel Lobato, in the firm’s Spanish IP Group in Madrid. The appointment closely follows that of former DLA Piper EU & Competition lawyer, Antonio Creus, who also joined the firm in Madrid.

Miguel joins from CMS Albiñana & Suarez de Lezo in Madrid, where he was head of the IP, IT & Media department. He has a broad range of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property experience including copyright, patents, trade marks, unfair competition, fundamental rights, defamation, privacy law (including data protection) and image rights.

Miguel has a particular focus on contentious copyright for the media and publishing sectors, and is an experienced litigator before the courts in Spain. He is also experienced in complex multi-jurisdictional litigation.

Prior to joining CMS Albiñana & Suarez de Lezo, Miguel was a partner at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo.

Commenting on Miguel’s appointment, Morag Macdonald, joint head of Bird & Bird’s International IP Group, said; “Miguel’s appointment is strategically important for the firm as we look to grow our successful IP practice in Madrid. His breadth of experience across all aspects of IP law, combined with our existing Madrid IP capability, makes for a very powerful Spanish IP practice.”

Javier Fernández-Samaniego, Managing Partner of Bird & Bird’s Madrid office, adds; “We are delighted to welcome Miguel to the firm. Bird & Bird’s IP team, headed by Manuel Lobato, has built a strong reputation within the Spanish IP market, and we feel that Miguel’s expertise in the contentious copyright and soft IP areas, combined with his excellent reputation as a litigator in the Spanish courts, will help us to further develop our IP practice.”

Commenting on his own appointment, Miguel said; “I'm very happy to join Bird & Bird's international IP Group with its strong and well deserved global reputation.”

Bird & Bird has a long established international reputation for its intellectual property expertise and is consistently rated a leader in the field by the major legal directories. The group, spread across 11 jurisdictions in Europe and Asia, provides a full range of IP law services concerned with the creation, protection, exploitation and enforcement of inventions, brands and trade marks, copyright and designs.
