Bird & Bird strengthens EU and Competition practice in Brussels with two lateral hires

13 August 2008

International law firm Bird & Bird today announces two key lateral hires from McDermott Will & Emery LLP: José Rivas, Head of EU and Competition Regulatory, and Morten Nissen join Bird & Bird's EU and Competition Practice Group in Brussels.

José's practice covers all aspects of EU and competition law. He has extensive experience in representing leading U.S., Japanese and European clients across a broad range of industries, including media, telecommunications, energy and biotechnology, and has extensive litigation experience before the European Courts in Luxembourg - having represented clients in competition, trade and institutional EU law.

Morten Nissen's practice focuses on advising private companies on matters including merger control, abuse of dominance and State aid. He also provides extensive advice on EU regulatory matters.

Both José and Morten have extensive experience in EU cartel cases, including administrative proceedings before the European Commission and national competition authorities and antitrust appeals before the European Courts.

Commenting on the appointments, Richard Eccles, Head Bird & Bird's International Competition Group, said;" We are very happy to welcome José and Morten to the firm. In addition to their reputations in EU and competition law, their experience in contentious competition matters will further strengthen our international competition practice and our Brussels office following the appointments of Antonio Creus in Madrid and Serge Durande in Brussels earlier this year.

José Rivas said; "I am delighted to be joining Bird & Bird. The firm's pan European reach, coupled with its innovative sector approach, offers me a chance to expand my practice - which has always been in the interface between IP and competition law - and presents an exciting challenge as we look to join the dots between the excellent national competition law practices in each of the firm's current jurisdictions.

Morten Nissen said; "The firm is well-known for its competition work in a number of its international offices. I am looking forward to joining José and Serge Durande in Brussels as we look to further enhance the reputation of the firm's wider competition practice."

Bird & Bird’s EU & Competition practice advises at EC level and in all its European jurisdictions on EU law and competition law including merger control, State aid, competition regulation of network industries, contentious anti-trust matters, and anti-trust in relation to a full range of commercial transactions, including research and development, technology collaboration agreements, software and content licensing, distribution and marketing agreements, service supply, outsourcing and dispute settlement agreements
