Bird & Bird strengthens corporate practice with key hire

09 May 2008

International law firm Bird & Bird today announces the appointment of Stuart Blythe, who joins the firm as a consultant from business communications provider, Viatel.

Stuart joins Bird & Bird’s corporate practice to concentrate on telecommunications M&A and restructuring, having previously been General Counsel at Viatel where he was responsible for the company’s legal support across eight jurisdictions. While at Viatel, Stuart in particular advised on the financing of the Viatel group (representing inward investment in excess of $130m), cross-border restructuring and the termination of the company’s US public reporting obligations through the implementation of a “going-private” transaction.

He has extensive international commercial, corporate and restructuring experience having previously practiced both in the US and UK, where he specialised in mergers and acquisitions, cross-border joint ventures and general corporate law matters.

Prior to joining Viatel, Stuart was head of the international legal department at business communications and IT provider, MCI International (now Verizon Business), where he advised on all commercial and corporate legal matters throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Neil Blundell, co-head of Bird & Bird’s London Corporate Group, said; “Stuart’s appointment comes at an exciting time for the corporate practice as we continue to enjoy sustained international growth. His particular expertise in telecoms restructuring is strategically important for us in the current market. In addition to his core experience, Stuart’s credentials in the telecoms sector will also help play an important role in the continued success of the wider firm in this field.”

Lucy Woods, CEO of Viatel, said; “Stuart made a huge contribution to the turnaround of Viatel addressing a number of complex issues with skill and determination. We will be delighted to maintain an ongoing relationship with him as a client of Bird & Bird."

Commenting on his appointment, Stuart said; “Bird & Bird’s corporate practice has developed a strong reputation over recent years. I believe that my experience in corporate restructuring, coupled with my understanding of the telecoms industry, means that I will be able to help Bird & Bird continue to strengthen its leading practice in this sector.”

Bird & Bird’s International Corporate Group has over 100 lawyers specialising in M&A, takeovers and IPOs, including AIM listings, private equity and governance – as well as key support areas such as acquisition and debt financing, employee benefits and tax.
