Bird & Bird and leading Singapore firm ATMD enter into global association

04 December 2008

International law firm Bird & Bird and Alban Tay Mahtani & de Silva LLP (ATMD) one of Singapore’s leading law firms, are entering into a global association agreement with effect from 1 January 2009.

The global association, built on strong practice and sector synergies between the two firms, will give Bird & Bird a presence in Singapore, a key regional hub in South East Asia.  Bird & Bird already has offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The global association gives ATMD’s clients access to Bird & Bird’s 20 office international reach across Europe and Asia.

Established on 1 August 1994, ATMD is a dynamic and progressive Singapore law firm with a strong track record in delivering results for its clients across multiple industries.

ATMD has 10 partners and 20 other lawyers in Singapore. The firm has a leading reputation in a number of Bird & Bird’s core sectors and practice areas.  It is in the top tier of IP firms in Singapore, according to the Asia Pacific Legal 500, and has particular strength in corporate and commercial work, especially in the area of technology.  ATMD is also a leader in Singapore in dispute resolution and has widely recognised expertise in employment, competition, energy, life sciences, media and real estate.

The association will take effect from 1 January 2009 and current ATMD Managing Partner Alban Kang will continue to be managing partner in Singapore.

ATMD is currently associated with Tay & Partners in Malaysia and this relationship will continue, though Tay & Partners will continue to operate as an independent firm.

Alban Kang, Managing Partner of ATMD, said; “This is a great deal for our people and our clients as Bird & Bird is a very similar firm to ATMD in terms of culture and approach to business, though on an international scale.  Our clients will benefit from the increased international coverage and wider array of legal skills, while our lawyers will have greater opportunities to work on cross border legal matters with new colleagues across Europe and Asia.”

Commenting on the global association, David Kerr, Bird & Bird’s CEO said; “With two successful offices in Beijing and Hong Kong and a new office recently opened in Shanghai, this association with ATMD, a very highly regarded firm in Singapore, will further grow our presence in Asia as we look to continue our policy of targeted international expansion.  We are confident that the association will be a success as the ATMD brand is very strong, having been built on the excellent reputation of its lawyers.”
