Bird & Bird builds international corporate team with Spanish hire

07 November 2006

International law firm Bird & Bird has recruited Javier Vasserot, a corporate partner, to head up the firm’s corporate team in Madrid. Javier will also play a key role in the expansion of the firm’s international corporate group which has grown substantially in the past couple of years with significant developments in other international offices of the firm.

Joining Bird & Bird’s office in Madrid as head of the Spanish corporate team, Javier brings with him a range of corporate/M&A and some finance experience. He began his career at Uria Menéndez, moved to Linklaters where he was one of the founding lawyers in their Spanish office before joining American firm Squire Sanders & Dempsey (now DLA Piper following its merger with Squire Sanders) as a partner at the age of 30. Javier is the fourth partner to join Bird & Bird’s Madrid office since it was launched last year.

Commenting on his appointment, Javier Fernández-Samaniego, managing partner of the firm’s Spanish office said:

“I worked with Javier when we were both at Linklaters and I know he will be an excellent fit with our team here. He has exceptional analytical skills, strategic vision and is a natural business builder, which makes him the perfect partner to help establish our corporate law capabilities in Spain”.

Commenting on his appointment, Javier Vasserot said: “Bird & Bird is an ambitious firm with a very exciting and well defined strategy for building its corporate group on an international basis. I’m very much looking forward to contributing to this development”.

Mark Pinder, co-head of the firm’s international corporate group added:

“Bird & Bird’s international corporate capabilities now extend across the whole of Western Europe and into Asia. Javier has the drive, energy and experience to become part of our outstanding, fast growing and highly regarded international team and he is undoubtedly the right person to develop our corporate law capabilities in Spain. We are all delighted that he has chosen to join us.”

Earlier this year, the firm expanded its corporate group in the UK with the appointments of Alistair Crellin from Pinsent Masons, Simon Allport from Jones Day and with the promotion of corporate tax lawyer Mathew Oliver to partner. In Dusseldorf, the firm also promoted corporate lawyer Jiri Jaeger to partner.
