International law firm Bird & Bird has recruited Grace Chen, an IT/Communications specialist to help build the firm’s commercial capabilities in China. Grace joins Bird & Bird from WilmerHale as a partner based in the firm’s Beijing office. Her appointment follows on from recent expansion for the firm in Asia, with the recruitment of top rated IP partner Shirley Kwok and with the growth of the Dispute Resolution practice led by Consultant Darren FitzGerald.
Grace is a respected Technology and Communications lawyer in China having focused on this area for nearly 10 years. She joins from WilmerHale’s Beijing office, which she helped to establish two years ago when she moved there from Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison along with a team. She has extensive experience of a broad range of issues affecting the hi-tech industry from regulatory matters to technology transfer and intellectual property. At Bird & Bird, Grace will work alongside partner Marcus Vass to continue to build the firm’s Communications, Media and Technology (`CMT’) practice in China. Grace’s appointment follows the recent hiring of senior lawyer David Len bringing the CMT practice in Asia to two partners and 7 other fee earners.
Matthew Laight, managing partner of the firm’s Hong Kong and Beijing offices said:
“Grace is almost uniquely suited for this position given her familiarity with China’s IT/IP regulatory landscape. In the course of her work at Wilmer Hale and prior to that at Paul Weiss, she has dealt with the various issues of relevance to technology companies in China and has acted as the lead lawyer in many complex and challenging transactions involving clients in the hi-tech industry. I am sure she will be a perfect fit and I’m delighted she’s joining us”.
Commenting on her appointment, Grace added:
“This is a very interesting opportunity for me. Bird & Bird has one of the pre-eminent IT and Communications groups in Asia bolstered by its sector strengths. As a China technology lawyer, I am very excited about joining the dominant player in the IT/IP arena of this region”.
