Bird & Bird advises Chelsea on “Football Icon” TV Series

27 May 2005

International law firm Bird & Bird has been advising Chelsea Football Club in relation to “Football Icon” – the football talent search competition to be aired on Sky One which offers the ultimate winner a professional contract with the Club. This is the first time ever in the UK that a professional football contract has been offered as a prize on a TV talent show.

Bird & Bird’s top rated sports group advised Chelsea FC on the commissioning and production of the show and on the terms relating to ownership of the format. The team was led by Justin Walkey (head of the Sports Group) assisted by Richard Hawkins.

Partner Justin Walkey said:

“Chelsea has been involved in some innovative deals this year and this one in particular is great for the development of the Chelsea brand. The format itself is designed to encourage young people to learn from the best in football – this should make compelling TV”.

Paul Smith – Director of Business Affairs at Chelsea said:

“We were once again very well supported by Bird & Bird. They are very rigorous in their approach and having worked in the sports business for years now have developed first class experience – just what we need when working on new ideas”.

The firm also recently advised Chelsea on their 5 year premium sponsorship agreement with Samsung – which was football’s largest ever sponsorship deal in the UK.
