Bird & Bird advises Fleming Media on novel venture with Science Museum

22 July 2005

International law firm Bird & Bird has been advising Fleming Media on their partnership with London’s world-renowned Science Museum. This exciting initiative between a private company and the public sector will develop and stage a 10-year programme of international ‘blockbuster’ exhibitions with a science theme under the brand “The Science Of...”.

Fleming Media was recently set-up by the Fleming family to explore new opportunities in the acquisition, creation and management of intellectual property rights. Together with the Science Museum, they have created a new joint venture, Science & Media LLP, which will run a series of themed exhibitions examining the science behind various topics. These will then tour other leading museums and exhibition halls backed by media and merchandising deals providing the new partnership with revenues from a number of territories while creating valuable intellectual property rights.

Bird & Bird advised on all aspects of the transaction including corporate, commercial, intellectual property and employment issues. Partner Nicola Maguire led the Bird & Bird team with assistance from John Wilkinson, Helen Down, Hayley French, Jeremy Nixon and Alison Dixon.

Commenting, Matthew Fleming, Managing Partner of Fleming Media, said:

“From a commercial perspective, Fleming Media has identified an untapped market in working with IP-rich institutions to develop initiatives to realise their huge latent value. Bird & Bird was able to provide a co-ordinated approach advising on all aspects of the transaction and we found their support invaluable throughout the project”.

Nicola Maguire added:

“Companies like Fleming Media have realised that there is a huge amount of latent value in intellectual property. The creation of Science & Media LLP is an exciting venture which will help the Science Museum untap its tremendous potential to run large exhibitions and provides Fleming Media with an excellent opportunity for its fund”.
