First Locally Qualified Biotech Patent Agent in Singapore from ATMD

25 May 2005

Alban Tay Mahtani & de Silva (ATMD) announced that one of its patent associates, Edmund Kok, has become the first locally qualified patent agent in Singapore in the area of biotechnology. Edmund graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and recently obtained his full certification as a Singapore patent agent after completing the Singapore patent agent examinations conducted by the National University of Singapore, IP Academy and Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS)

Said Sheena Jacob, Head of ATMD’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice, “We are extremely proud to have Edmund qualify as a registered Singapore patent agent with us. He is an important addition to our Patents Group and to our growing Biotech practice. The fact that he has come through the local system demonstrates ATMD’s commitment to developing and training local talent.”

She added, “At ATMD, we are continuing to strengthen our patent practice in all technical areas. Staffing a capable and dedicated team of technically qualified patent attorneys in Singapore and the region is just one of the ways that we can better serve our clients. With Edmund’s qualification, we now have 6 Singapore registered patent agents in the firm. We are continuing to train Singapore science and engineering graduates as patent attorneys”

Edmund has had a substantial practice in the field of patents, and even spent time with a top UK patent attorney firm where he gained invaluable experience in biotechnology patent law from a UK and European perspective. Edmund has also prepared for and participated in an opposition hearing at the European Patent Office.

Said Edmund, “ The biotech industry is a growing one in Singapore and the region and I look forward to helping companies here in developing their protection strategies”

ATMD has one of the leading IP practices in Singapore. In both 2003 and 2004, ATMD was voted in the top category for Intellectual Property in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 in Singapore. ATMD has also consistently been ranked as one of the top 5 firms in Singapore in both the areas of patents and trademarks in the
Managing IP World IP Global Survey Poll. ATMD was also voted as Singapore’s IP Firm of the year at the Asian Legal Business (SEA) Awards 2005.
