Key appointments boost creation of dedicated European data protection practice

International law firm Bird & Bird has recruited a data protection team at its office in Paris. Partner Ariane Mole will be joining the firm on the 1st of June along with an assistant to head up the Data Protection practice in Paris. The appointment of the team will bolster the firm’s teams in the UK and Germany and will create a dedicated European data protection practice group.

Ariane Mole is one of the most renowned lawyers within France specialising on data protection issues. She joins Bird & Bird from law firm Bensoussan where she was head of their Data Protection team. Prior to that she worked for the European Commission where she contributed to the creation of the groundbreaking data protection directive of 1995. Before that she worked for CNIL (The National Commission for Data Protection and Privacy in France) where she was involved in a number of international issues. Ariane will be joining Bird & Bird with assistant Hélène Lebon who has been working with her since 1999.

The appointment of the team in Paris is part of a broader dedicated investment to bolster the firms’ international data protection practice with recent appointments in Germany and a dedicated UK team. The new international group will be led jointly by Ariane in Paris and Ruth Boardman, the data protection partner in the firms’ UK office.

Commenting on the appointments Frédérique Dupuis-Toubol, managing partner of Bird & Bird’s Paris office said:

“We are delighted that Ariane is joining us with Hélène. Data protection and privacy issues are becoming increasingly important across all our sectors and as such the development of a team concentrating on these issues is crucial to the European strategy of Bird & Bird. We’re therefore very pleased that such a well known team is joining us”.

Commenting on her appointment, Ariane Mole added:

“I am very excited to be joining Bird & Bird. I am very proud to be in the position where I will be able to provide a strong contribution to building up Bird & Bird’s data protection capability on an international level”.
