Key hires bolster international corporate practice

International law firm, Bird & Bird has just recruited a team of notaries in its rapidly expanding office in The Hague and will also be establishing a dedicated "Asian Desk". Joining from Andersen Legal, partner Steven van der Waal and Asian lawyer Yufang Guo along with a team of 5 assistants, will provide key support to Bird & Bird's clients on an international basis. The team joined the firm on 1st June 2002.

The recruitment adds further to the growth of Bird & Bird's corporate practice, having recently established a tax practice in The Hague. These latest appointments will enable the firm to provide a full range of corporate services to its international clients. Partner, Steven van der Waal and his 3 assistants will concentrate on corporate notarial work (incorporations, share transfers, joint ventures, restructurings) as well as real estate transactions. Yufang Guo with his two assistants will set up a dedicated "Asian Desk" advising European companies investing in Asia and Asian companies investing in Europe.

Commenting on their appointments, joint managing partner of Bird & Bird's office in The Hague, Harry Rek, said:

"I am very glad that Steven, Yufang and their teams, will be joining us. Our clients, many of whom are international, often require a very comprehensive range of corporate support. Having notarial expertise to provide speedy solutions is imperative, particularly when working on international joint ventures. We are also very privileged that we will be able to provide further value to our corporate clients through our Asian Desk, which will also work closely with Bird & Bird's office in Hong Kong."

This development is another step in the growth of Bird & Bird's office in The Hague.

Harry Rek adds:

"As an office, we are growing really fast. By the end of the summer we will have 60 people working in the Netherlands, of whom 40 are lawyers. We expect to have a continued gradual expansion of up to about 100 people, of whom 70 will be lawyers, in about three years time. Furthermore, we are also looking to broaden our services within specific disciplines. Labour law and administrative/environmental law are now high on the agenda."
