The Audiovisual Management Handbook 1st Edition

The Audiovisual Management Handbook

Peter Dally

The Media Business School, 1st Edition - June 2002.

Produced in collaboration with the Media Programme of the European Union, this is the first comprehensive handbook to give an in depth look at film, TV and multimedia in Europe. The aim is to raise the awareness of those in the creative process to be made aware of the day to day business that is needed as the lifeblood of any business, but with particular reference to these creative areas. Divided into four areas (overview, development, production, commercialisation and market strategies) you get subjects such as tax, TV revenues, exhibition agreements, completion guarantees, legal issues and financing raise their heads.

These are not exciting subjects, but any aspiring filmmaker must have a knowledge of these issues. Indeed, it could be argued that to demonstrate knowledge of these subjects will help the next generation of filmmakers to obtain the funding and support that will be vital to them. The methods used have been to compile all of the information delivered during the six month period of the MEGA, the Media Business School's Masters in European Audiovisual Management. Created in 1997 to give students the knowledge and tools to expand their skills, some fifty professionals give students the benefit of their experience each year and give them the confidence to stalk the corridors of the production companies.

To understand the business is to have an important advantage. The overview is far more than that. Areas covered include a brief history of how European film developed over the decades and the current standing of the industry and markets. Statistics and graphs show film production, budgets and investment, whilst the importance of cable and satellite is also discussed. Future trends are suggested including reduced costs, but also public regulation. Individual roles are defined so that you know exactly what it is you expect from a producer, and what they will expect from you as well as some of the bodies associated with them. All of the aspects of production are covered including the all so important area of marketing and distribution. All this occurs before you even get to the section on Development which concentrates on the legal aspects of companies and introduces management control systems and (shock horror) accounting. Even balance sheets are included! Want to know about Capital Stock, Retained Earnings or even Deferred Charges, then look no more. If you don't want to know what they are, then rest assured these topics will ambush you in the future. Financing strategies are covered in depth and unless you have a very wealthy uncle who likes you, then these are areas which need to be paid attention. Business planning, legal issues, marketing issues and budgeting all receive the same approach. This isn't a coffee table book stuffed full of glossy pictures. It has a specific purpose to be educational to dedicated professionals and thus relies on graphs and charts. Think of it as the ultimate reference book devised by those on the front line!
