Martin is Senior Consultant in the Intellectual Property Group. Prior to joining Bird & Bird in 2008, he worked at the Institute for Information Law of the University of Amsterdam, the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Munich, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva. In 2007, he was appointed Professor of Intellectual Property at the VU University Amsterdam.

Martin has broad expertise in the fields of intellectual property, information and unfair competition law. He focuses on copyright and database protection in the digital environment; advertising, merchandising and personality rights; the protection of goodwill under trademark and unfair competition law; trademark and industrial design registration systems and portfolio management; and international and European intellectual property policies.

He is editor of the Dutch legal journal Copyright, Media and Information Law (AMI), co-founder of the Trademark Law Institute (TLI) and member of ALAI.

His publications in Dutch, English, French and German cover various aspects of substantive and procedural intellectual property law. Martin is frequently invited as a speaker and lecturer at the national and international level.
