Martin is the Head of Bird & Bird's office in Slovakia.
Martin recently joined Bird & Bird from the European Commission in Brussels (DG Internal Market, Directorate – Corporate Law and Governance). Martin speaks fluent Slovakian, Czech and English, and has a working knowledge of German and French. Martin's experience includes:
- Dealing with infringement cases against EU Member States
- Public procurement procedures
- Litigation
- Real estate work
- Acting for various clients on the acquisition of Slovak companies
- Representing clients in front of Antimonopoly office of the Slovak republic
- Supervision of legislative processes and relations with other EU institutions
- Screening of EU Member States’ legislation for compatibility with primary and secondary EC legislation and with the general principles of EU law as interpreted by the European Court of Justice
- Several lawsuits against the Slovak Republic lodged at the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic
Martin studied law in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, The Netherlands and the USA. He has a Magister of Laws qualification from the Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic; a Doctor of Laws from Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia; an LLM (Master of Laws in European Law - graduated with distinction (cum laude) from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands; and an LL.M. in Law, Science and Technology from the Stanford Law School, Stanford, California.
