At Bird & Bird we take learning and development seriously. We help all our people to excel by providing a comprehensive range of world-class learning and development programmes.

Our specialist learning and development department organises legal, technical and business skills training for all our legal and non-legal staff. We believe that everybody has an important contribution to make to the success of our business and everybody is offered targeted development and training relevant to their particular role. At Bird & Bird you can be assured of getting comprehensive and excellent support to learn and grow in your role.

There are clear, published career development paths for people in legal and non-legal roles. A friendly culture of regular dialogue with supervisors - along with ongoing learning and development support - ensures that our people understand how they are progressing, how to get ahead and the network of support around them to do so.

For our lawyers, legal and business skills seminars are available at all stages of their careers, from trainees to partners. These learning sessions help our lawyers to maintain their strong reputation for technical legal excellence, commerciality and business acumen. Lawyers can attend regular legal updates and industry briefings, as well as sessions around new developments in technology and business sectors. A full sequence of career development programmes carefully guide our lawyers from trainee to partner, and various entry points for lateral recruits mean that everybody is included. These career development programmes focus on key business skills and cover topics such as strategic thinking, marketing and business development, financial health, working in legal teams, leadership, drafting and negotiation skills etc.

People working in non-legal roles (including IT, Marketing, Financial, KM and HR professionals, as well as Executive and Personal Assistants) also have access to excellent learning and career development support. Career development programmes targeted to the needs of different groups are available and they cover business topics such as leadership skills, presentation technique, plain language drafting, project management and IT skills.

All our people (whether in legal or non-legal roles) have access to further learning in the form of language training and also support for attendance at external courses and conferences. We have a popular and well-established coaching programme whereby anybody may ask for bespoke and personal assistance from an expert coach. Career and personal development also occurs through secondments to other Bird & Bird offices and clients.

What all our learning has in common is that it is highly practical and very relevant. In-house or external experts facilitate sessions which engage and develop our people. We are proud to be officially accredited as an "Investor in People" organisation.
